Landscape architect West 8 is going to design a square for the Leiden Bio Science Park: a central meeting place that will become the heart of the campus. The campus square will be located between the entrance area at Plesmanlaan /Ehrenfestweg, the new Gorlaeus Building and the Gorlaeus College Hall Building of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Construction will start in the first half of 2021. The square will be ready in 2023.
For the design, the architect collaborates with an ecologist for more biodiversity in the area. The pond that enters the square is connected to the nearby ditches. The design will tie in with sustainability measures that have already been set in motion for the environment, such as the LBSP biodiversity plan and the "BREEAM Area Development" sustainability method for the western part of the Bio Science Park.
The campus square is not only intended for students and employees of the university, but also for companies in the park and residents and visitors from all over Leiden and beyond. They can walk, have lunch here and there are opportunities to study. A large water feature with seating areas makes the square extra attractive for relaxation and meeting. The campus square is also suitable for large events.
