Demolition of LCP and the Gorlaeus high-rise
The Leiden University-commissioned demolition of the LCP building has begun, right next to the 'dish' in the Leeuwenhoek. The demolition team has started with asbestos removal and ‘pre-demolition’, which entails the removal of all non-brick elements by hand.
The demolition of both the LCP building and the adjacent high-rise is expected to take 2 years.
The demolition is being carried out in line with the BREEAM Excellent standard, an assessment method based on sustainability. In this case, it means that the demolition must be CO2 neutral and should not cause any disturbance.
The debris is being processed into granules at the demolition site, and will be incorporated into the new construction of the Science Campus as building material or, if that is not possible, will be used as road foundation.
