Sustainability

Ever since the initial plans, a great deal of attention has been devoted to people, planet and profit at the Leiden Bio Science Park. Sustainability has been fully integrated into the development of the area and it is our ambition to build further on this foundation. The overarching sustainability ambition of the partners (university and municipality) is to achieve BREEAM-NL Area Certification. BREEAM is an international sustainability label that fits well with the profile of the Bio Science Park. Some organisations at Leiden Bio Science Park already have  BREEAM certification, namely at the level of the buildings.

 

Synergy

The Leiden Bio Science Park has a strong economic profile focused on life sciences and health, in which leading educational and research institutions and companies work together closely. There is room in the park for the expansion of businesses, facilities and functions that contribute to greater cohesion and vibrancy. Not only does the mixed programme encourage meetings and longer stays, but the design of the public space, expertly utilising water and green, creates greater synergy.

 

Sources: energy and materials

The goal is to ensure that work is as energy efficient as possible in Leiden Bio Science Park, both in terms of public space and in the buildings. This includes the storage of heat and cold, the generation of renewable energy and limiting paved surfaces in the public space.

 

Spatial developments

The location and layout of the LBSP is sustainable: the park has good connections with the public transport network (train and HOV bus). Our ambition is to expand and improve the safe and traffic-free cycle and pedestrian routes. As much as possible, parking facilities are in constructed facilities. The paths between the parking facilities and destinations pass through vibrant public spaces that aim to encourage encounters. Every effort will be made to preserve existing features and green, ecological structures. There is no question that the landscape is the vehicle for creating the visual image of the whole area. Greenery and water are always visible, from the pathways and the buildings; they improve the microclimate and help make a visit to the area a pleasant experience, as well as contributing to the positive image of the park and the public space.

The current buildings are already predominantly sustainable, and it is our explicit intention to achieve sustainable buildings in all new real estate developments.
